On October 30 & 31 a special group of First Nations women gathered in Goulburn for a powerful health initiative that brought community, support, and empowerment to the forefront. With the collective effort of Grand Pacific Health’s Integrated Team Care (ITC) program, BreastScreen NSW, and NSW Health, the event aimed to enhance awareness and increase participation in breast screening.
The response was inspiring, with 59 Aboriginal women aged 40-74 taking part, 26 of whom were first-time participants. This marked a significant one-third increase in screening participation compared to last year, closing the long-standing gap in breast screening for Aboriginal women in the region. For the first time, participation rates among Aboriginal women have surpassed those of the general population.
The event was enriched by Support The Girls Australia, who provided essentials such as bras and hygiene products, ensuring that participants felt supported and valued. Additionally, Grand Pacific Health’s We Breathe – Tackling Indigenous Smoking team contributed valuable health insights, creating a holistic day of connection, respect, and empowerment. Traditional weaving and storytelling added warmth and a sense of belonging, making it clear that health is about more than just the physical—it is about community, resilience, and cultural pride.
This initiative exemplifies Grand Pacific Health’s commitment to culturally respectful, accessible healthcare that addresses disparities and fosters community wellbeing. Events like these demonstrate that when communities come together, significant strides can be made in health equity and awareness.
