Shellharbour Medicare Mental Health recently received a significant addition to its space with the donation of “Ngurudjalawalibingalin”, an extraordinary artwork by acclaimed Aboriginal artist Warwick Keen. This acrylic-on-canvas piece, measuring 60cm x 220cm, reflects Warwick’s signature style of pattern making and text, interwoven with Dharawal language to honour the First Nations people of the Illawarra.
The title of the piece, “Ngurudjalawalibingalin,” translates to “country owns us” in Dharawal language. Warwick, a Gomeroi man, created this work as part of an exhibition exploring the landscapes and heritage of the Illawarra. Through its bold patterns and meaningful words, the artwork prompts us to listen to the stories the country tells and acknowledges the rich culture and resilience of the Dharawal people.
Warwick shared his journey during a morning tea held in his honour. This work is now proudly displayed at Shellharbour Medicare Mental Health, enriching the space with its cultural significance and beauty. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Warwick Keen for his generous donation and the important message his work carries.
