Living with chronic pain can affect every part of a person’s life, from physical health to emotional wellbeing. For one participant in Grand Pacific Health’s free Chronic Pain Program, the experience has been transformative, helping them develop new ways to manage pain and regain a sense of balance and control.

After living with ongoing pain for decades, the participant described feeling frustrated with their body and deeply impacted by depression. Years of navigating the health system and receiving varying diagnoses left them feeling uncertain and discouraged. Personal experiences with addiction in their family also meant they were reluctant to rely on pain medication, leaving them searching for alternative ways to manage their condition.

Despite initial scepticism, the program quickly became an essential part of their week.

“The program helped me understand and accept that I have chronic pain, and that it’s okay to have bad days,” they said. “I don’t hate on myself the way I used to.”

A key strength of the program was its focus on understanding the connection between the mind and body. Through the program, the participant learned practical strategies including breathwork, meditation and nervous system techniques — tools they now use regularly in everyday life.

“These are things I wouldn’t have even looked at before,” they said. “It’s given me tools I can actually use to cope.”

The participant also accessed individual support, describing the approach as respectful, safe and grounded. While the program has not changed the underlying medical condition, it has significantly improved their quality of life.

“It hasn’t fixed my illness, but it has changed how I live with it. That has made a huge difference.”

The positive impact has extended beyond the participant themselves, with their GP now referring other patients to the program after seeing the changes firsthand.
