Carers Supporting Young People

The Suicide Prevention Carer Support (Young People) Program provides carers of young people in the Nepean Blue Mountains with the tools, knowledge and support to help a young person at risk of suicide. The program brings carers, family and friends together to learn, share and connect with others who understand what they’re going through.

The program combines both group and individual support facilitated by our Carer Support Group Family Clinician and Peer Workers.

Face to Face Groups
The face-to-face groups offer simple, practical support and information to help you:
• Learn how to be there for a young person who might be thinking about suicide or experiencing periods of suicidal distress
• Explore ways to look after yourself while supporting others
• Know about places nearby that can help young people at risk of suicide
• Learn how to connect the young person you care about to these helpful places
• Discover how to talk and work with the young person to help keep them safe

Three group sessions (2 hours each) are delivered over 5 weeks.

Individual Telehealth Sessions
Individual telehealth sessions are offered between each group session (2 in total). During these sessions you will be able to speak with staff over the phone or by video. This will give you the opportunity to ask any further questions and connect to our team individually.

Safety Net Sessions
Carers are able to reach out for two support calls, within two months following the conclusion of the groups. In these one-hour calls, you can speak with the Carer Support Program team, who will work with you to reflect on the learning and group materials and guide you in accessing services that might be helpful.

Our Carer Support Program is delivered with no cost to participants.
