Ben is a young person who reached out to headspace Wollongong wanting support for managing his anxiety.
At his intake, he mentioned he wanted support finding work, possibly in a Beekeeping role as he’d just completed his Beekeeping course. The team referred him to both the Work & Study program (formerly known as Individual Placement & Support) & also mental health support.
He was linked in with Georgia, his Work & Study worker. They immediately started working on his resume and cover letter and helping him prepare for job interviews. He received an offer for a job interview at a local bookstore after only a few months in the program. Georgia even suggested doing a mock interview together to help Ben build his confidence to know what to say on the day. While he did amazingly in his interview, he didn’t get this job.
Georgia & Ben kept on finding different ways to look for work. They dropped resumes around to local employers in the area & applied for jobs online.
Ben was very keen on finding an Administrative Assistant office job. After he applied for an admin job at a local meat wholesale supplier, with his consent, Georgia visited the employer in person to advocate for hiring this young person. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the bookkeeping qualifications or skills they were looking for, but he had just come across a great opportunity.
He had a job interview for an Admin job at another local business. Again, he didn’t have the right skills needed for this role, but they offered him a work trial in their call centre. He did great on his trial, was commended by them for being a quick learner, and ended up getting the Call Centre job.
Ben had been working there casually for a few months. He was getting consistent hours of work & was really happy with how things were going. Because things were going so well, this young person felt he no longer needed Work & Study support, so he decided to finish up with the program.
