Heart week Liz 002

The Connecting Care team have been busy during Heart Week 2019 spreading the word about the importance of having a Heart Health Check.

In collaboration with the National Heart Foundation two events were conducted in the Shellharbour area. The first was at the Baptist Care Centre in Warilla where we were invited to join in on ‘Toastie Tuesday’. Ten regular attendees had their blood pressure taken and heart age calculation attended. Some ‘heart ages’ were higher than people’s actual age due to risk factors such as smoking, family history, high blood pressure and being overweight. GPH nurses were there to provide support and guidance regarding lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, smoking cessation and increased activity levels and were rewarded with a hot toastie – yum yum!

Later in the week a promotional event was held in the new Shellharbour City Library. Interest was greater than expected with nearly 30 people stopping to chat to the nurses about heart health and have their heart age calculation attended.  A healthy heart walk took place from the library into the surrounding neighbourhood giving some new walkers the opportunity to meet with some veterans of the program. Many people left with information on local walking groups with the promise of joining one so that they can not only increase their activity level, but make new friends along the way. A fun and informative day was had by all!
