Tobacco Breaks Hearts: Butt out Boondah and Beat Strong

The link between smoking and cancer is a well-known fact but many people are unaware that smoking is a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases, like heart attack and stroke.

Thursday May 31st marks ‘World No Tobacco Day’, an annual event created by the World Health Organisation over 30 years ago.

To celebrate World No Tobacco Day, the Grand Pacific Health Butt out Boondah team are hosting a FREE event for the community including a BBQ, health checks, smoking support and prize giveaways at the Queanbeyan Showgrounds Pavilion. All are welcome to attend on Thursday May 31st from 11am – 2pm.

Tackling Indigenous Smoking Coordinator at GPH, Nina Holland, says that this year’s event aims to raise awareness of the link between smoking and heart disease:

“Every year, over two million people who smoke will die from heart disease.”

“It’s encouraging to see health messages about smoking getting through to younger people, with more and more choosing not to take up the habit,” Nina said.

“However an important message to share with all of community is that it’s never too late to quit and that the Butt out Boondah team are here to support you on that journey, no matter how many times you have tried before,” Nina added.

According to The Heart Foundation, after one year of quitting smoking your risk of stroke or heart attack is halved. Within 5-15 years your risk of heart disease is the same as somebody who has never smoked.

With Queanbeyan and the surrounding region seeing some of the highest Indigenous smoking rates in NSW, the GPH Butt out Boondah team is committed to supporting Southern NSW communities to quit smoking for their health and their families.
