Illawarra Shoalhaven Partners in Recovery (ISPIR), a service for people with severe and persistent mental health issues lead by Grand Pacific Health, are offering a free 8 week surf therapy program for ISPIR consumers.

“Waves of Wellness’ kicked off with a splash last week and continues this Thursday from 10am – 12pm at North Beach Wollongong.

Grand Pacific Health’s NDIS Individual Capacity Building Coordinator, Alan Beadnell, says the program is facilitated by mental health clinicians trained in surf safety and ocean awareness:

“This unique learn-to-surf program is designed for people experiencing mental health issues, facilitating functional recovery, while promoting social inclusion, engagement and quality of life.”

“It promotes the benefit of physical health in mental health recovery- within a natural, non-threatening environment.”

“Through involvement in this program, participants also gain the opportunity to learn how to use surfing as a coping strategy for their mental health,” added Alan.

Waves of Wellness currently exists in 8 locations around Australia, however this will be the first time it has been offered in the Illawarra.

There are plans to offer the program in the Shoalhaven in February 2018.

A peer worker will be attending each session to ensure the comfort and safety of all participants.
